Mission Statement
The Museum of Monterey is dedicated to being a leader in models of history and social studies education and a regional leader in educational programming. Therefore, the Museum will implement an array of education-centered programs including outreach and special events. Programs will engage the community in innovative and dynamic ways while providing opportunities for life-long learning. To support these goals, the Museum is committed to the creation of a strong educational program with an infrastructure that supports effective services. We intend to increase the potential for visual and historic literacy, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Topically, the Museum of Monterey will focus on the Monterey Region as a community tied to the land and inspire the appreciation for the beauty and complexity of its rich history.
Educational Philosophy
The Museum of Monterey understands that whereas didactic education typically takes place in school settings, the Museum should facilitate learner constructed intellectual growth. We believe that people are inherently curious and have interests and experiences to contribute. The Monterey History and Art Association and the Museum of Monterey Educational Programs will focus on active engagement and an educational infrastructure that supports inquiry and connection to the community.
