MHAA is excited to announce the opening of our "Year of the Missions" exhibition at the Museum of Monterey. Guest curated by Dr. Julianne Burton-Carvajal, the four-part series commemorates the 300th anniversary of the birth of Franciscan missionary Junipero Serra on November 24, 1713.

The first exhibit, "Junipero Serra Before California," features the photography of Jeffrey Becom taken at five World Heritage site churches in Mexico's Sierra Gorda and supplemented with drawings by Richard Perry.

Future exhibits include "Riding the Mission Trail with Artist Jo Mora" (February 1-April 28, 2013), "Missions of California & the Southwest" (May 10-July 28, 2013) and "Picturing California Missions in Ruin & Restoration" (August 10-November 24, 2013).

In addition, MHAA and MoM will host a wide variety of associated programs, including guest lecturers and gallery talks by artists, curators and historians.

A special Thank You to the following patrons for their generous donations to MHAA/MOM for this very special exhibit:

  • Karen Witmer-Gow
  • Christine Kemp
  • Carol Todd
  • Anne Burk
