Year of the Missions 2012 – 2013

The Monterey History and Art Association is proud to announce our "Year of the Missions" exhibition series featuring four rotating exhibits at the Museum of Monterey.Guest-curated by Dr. Julianne Burton-Carvajal as part of the tri-national commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the birth of Franciscan missionary Junípero Serra on November 24, 1713.Opening reception: for the first exhibit in the Year of the Missions series, "Junipero Serra Before California", photography by Jeffrey Becom.At the Museum of Monterey:5 Custom House Plaza, across from Fisherman's Wharf. November 24th from 3-5 pm. Free and open to the public of all ages

  • Junípero Serra Before California :Five World Heritage Site Churches in Mexico’s Remote Sierra Gorda –Photographs by Jeffrey Becom,Drawings by Richard Perry November 24, 2012 - January 20, 2013
  • Riding the Mission Trail in 1903 with Artist Jo Mora –Drawings, Watercolors, Diary Entries (In collaboration with the Jo Mora Trust) February 1 - April 28
  • Missions of California & the Southwest : The 1930s Series by “Mission Painter" Will Sparks (In collaboration with Trotter Galleries, Carmel & Pacific Grove) May 10 - July 28
  • Picturing California Missions in Ruin & Restoration – From Glass Plate Negatives to 3-D Laser Scans (In development – in collaboration with California Views Photo Archives, various Monterey Diocese parishes, Carmel Mission Foundation, CyArk Foundation, etc.) August 10 - November 24

Associated programs to include: • Premiere screening of Junípero Serra: His Life, Legacy & Missions, 2012 by Cultural Global Media of Santa Barbara • More About the Missions – a free rotating film series Sundays 1-4pm in the MoM Auditorium, November 25-January 20 • A series of guest lectures beginning in January with Dr. Ruben Mendoza of CSU-MB on solar illuminations in the California missions • Gallery talks by artists, curators, historians, and collaborators
